Homelessness

The Missouri Balance of State (BoS) CoC conducts a Point-in-Time Count throughout its 101 county geographic area each year as required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The count helps Missourians monitor trends in the homeless population and increases public awareness of homelessness. The unsheltered Point in Time Count was not conducted nationally in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Median Income - Family Households

Median (midpoint) income for family households, including those with and without children. Family households include two or more individuals related by birth, marriage or adoption. Family income is the preferred measure of economic wellbeing in university communities like Columbia and Boone County, since the majority of the student population resides in non-family households. Household income (i.e. including both family and non-family households) is artificially low due to the student population.

Gini Index of Income Inequality

The Gini Index is a measure of income inequality ranging from 0 to 1. A value of 0 represents perfect income equality (everyone has the same income); a value of 1 represents complete inequality (one person has all the income and others have none). Warehouse data is updated twice a year and is as up to date as the data source when published.

Unemployment: Annual Average Rate

Labor force, employment and unemployment are defined by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The labor force includes people who are employed and those without a job who are actively looking for work and available for work. People who are not working or actively looking for work are not part of the labor force. Labor force and unemployment statistics are based on a survey sent to civilians in the US who are aged 16 and older living outside of institutions. The survey is not sent to people who live in institutions like corrections facilities or nursing homes. The survey is not sent to people on active duty in the Armed Forces.
